In 2017 I was deeply ensconced in archaeological textile research while completing my MA in York, England and needed a creative outlet separate from this work. What started as an exploration of texture during study breaks quickly turned into a love letter of sorts to the many places I have visited and inhabited which boast a stoic, “Northern” identity. Lichen covered rocks remind me of my favourite places in Atlantic Canada and Scandinavia, while the importance of seal meat and skin to many northern Atlantic communities cannot be overstated. Exploring these textures and reimagining a Selkie figure allowed me to combine aesthetic experimentation with a piece of mythology from my own Scottish background that has always fascinated me.
